In a field in Pakistan.... the 10,000-ton cargo ship "Clan Alpine", with cows grazing around her! The paddy field is 14 miles from Chittagong; and the ship is a stark reminder of the devastating cyclone that hit East Pakistan last October.

The "Clan Alpine" - she is British-owned - was carried by the tidal bore to this odd resting place. Now, the anchor is embedded in the ground, and the rudder and four-bladed propeller are high and dry. And although rust is setting in, the ship is still "home" to a few Pakistani members of the crew. The cargo, however, was unloaded some time ago.

And even if it doesn't work, the propeller provides a lot of fun for children to play around. The "Clan Alpine", already something of a famous landmark, was probably seen by Queen Elizabeth II and her husband the Duke of Edinburgh when they arrived at Chittagong by air on the Royal Tour.

But what of the future of the ship? The main parts will either be dismantled, or the ship will wait for the weather to decide her fate. The cows, however, do not seem particularly perturbed that this steel monster from the sea has invaded the privacy of their field!
