  • Description

Thousands of people gathered at Teheran University on Tuesday (19 June) to commemorate the second anniversary of the death of Dr. Ali Sharaiti. The exiled leader was regarded by many as the ideological mastermind behind the Iranian Islamic Republic.

SYNOPSIS: To the thousands who gathered at the University, Ali Sharaiti was a hero. After his death in London in 1977, Iranians opposed to the Shah claimed he was murdered by the Shah's secret police, SAVAK. Tuesday's commemoration showed the high esteem in which he is held by the new revolutionary Government of Iran.

Among those who addressed the crowd was Ahmad Sadr Hadj Seyed Djavadi -- the new minister of Justice.

Ali Shariati's father, Mohamad Taghi Shariati -- with the hat and glasses -- joined in the commemoration of his son's work. Beside him is the Ayatollah Khamane's a prominent member of the Islamic Republic Party.

The Justice Minister also delivered a message from the Iranian Prime Minister, Dr. Mehdi Bazargan.

Although it was never proved, the new Iranian Government claims his death was a political killing, aimed at silencing one of the Shah's most critical opponents. Dr. Shariati is regarded as having provided the idealogical means by which the ancient teaching of Islam has been integrated with twentieth century political thinking.

This demonstration was the first to mark the anniversary of Dr. Shariati's death. On Friday (22 June) the National Democratic Front and other left-wing groups plan a further rally -- also at the University -- in memory of Dr. Shariati.
