Background: IN AND NEAR VARNA, BULGARIA

Italy's Carlo Capone retained his overall lead in the European Motor Rally Championship with a victory over Finland's henri Toivonen in the 1200 kilometre Bulgaria rally which finished in the Black Sea resort of Varna on May 13. Capone and Italian co-driver Sergio Cresto were driving a Lancia Rally and won the 34 hour event by 36 seconds. Toivonen and co-driver Britain's Ian Grindrod in a Porsche 911 had led initially, and then traded first place with Capone and Cresto. At one point the Porsche suffered a minor engine problem. Then late arrival at a time control resulted in penalties. The Lancia lost time on one stage in a snowstorm. Capone's victory in the 34 special stage event puts him in the lead on 240 points in the overall championship, with Toivonen second on 209. Third place in Bulgaria went to Robert Droogmans and R. Joosten in another Porsche 911, with Terry Kaby fourth in a Nissan 240 RS.
