TRANSCRIPT: SEQ. 11: VORSTER: TODAY, I BELIEVE THEY UNDERSTAND EACH BETTER THAN AT ANY TIME SINCE 1820, BECAUSE, AS SOME ARE WONT TO SAY, CIRCUMSTANCES ARE FORCING THEM TO STAND TOGETHER. BUT, I SINCERELY BELIEVE BECAUSE THEY WANT TO STAND TOGETHER. THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATION, IF SUCH A NATION HAS NOT YET COME INTO EXISTENCE, WILL IN TIME TO COME, GROW OUT OF THE PEOPLE. AND, THEREFORE, THE HISTORY OF THE SETTLERS, ALTHOUGH I AM NOT A DESCENDANT OF THE SETTLERS, APPEALS TO ME BECAUSE IT IS PART OF THE HISTORY OF SOUTH AFRICA.

Background: THE SOUTH AFRICAN PRIME MINISTER, MR. VORSTER, ON MONDAY PAID TRIBUTE TO BRITONS WHO SETTLED IN SOUTH AFRICA IN 1820 - THE YEAR WHEN THE FIRST ORGANISED EMMIGRATION FROM BRITAIN BEGAN.

SPEAKING AT A CEREMONY IN GRAHAMSTOWN, WHERE HE LAID THE FOUNDATION STONE FOR A MEMORIAL TO THE FIRST SETTLERS, MR. VORSTER SAID THAT PEOPLE OF LESSER CALIBRE THAN THE BRITISH PIONEERS WOULD HAVE PERISHED IN THE CONDITIONS IN WHICH THEY FIRST HAD TO LIVE.

FOUR THOUSAND BRITONS LANDED AT WHAT IS NOW PORT ELIZABETH, AND THEN TREKKED INLAND TO THE GRAHAMSTOWN AREA AND ESTABLISHED FARMS ON THE UNFERTILE LAND. EACH FARMER HAD ONLY ABOUT ONE HUNDRED ACRES, AND MOST RELIED ON DAIRY HERDS. DESPITE ALMOST UNENDURABLE HARDSHIPS THEY SUCCEEDED EVENTUALLY IN THEIR VENTURE.

GRAHAMSTOWN TODAY IS A BUSTLING, THRIVING CITY WITH A POPULATION OF MORE THAN 24-THOUSAND. IT IS THE HOME OF THE ALBANY MUSEUM, ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST AUTHORITATIVE INSTITUTES ON SOUTH AFRICAN FAUNA AND EARLY AFRICAN CULTURES.

MORE THAN 1,500 PEOPLE ATTENDED THE FOUNDATION-LAYING CEREMONY. THE MEMORIAL WILL COST ONE MILLION RAND (GBP500-THOUSAND STERLING). MR. VORSTER SPOKE ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN BRITONS AND AFRIKAANS.
