  • Description

IN LONDON'S WEMBLEY STADIUM TODAY (SEPT 11) THE WORLD'S TOP SPEEDWAY RIDERS WERE PRACTISING FOR THE WORLD SPEEDWAY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL, TO BE HELD ON SATURDAY (SEPTEMBER 14).

OVER 70,000 PEOPLE ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND THE FINAL, WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER STAR RIDERS FROM ENGLAND, NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA, WALES, SWEDEN, NORWAY, AND RUSSIA.

NUMERICALLY, SWEDEN HAS THE STRONGEST REPRESENTATION WITH SIX RIDERS AMONG THE SIXTEEN FINALISTS, INCLUDING THEIR TRIPLE WORLD CHAMPION, OVE FUNDIN. FUNDIN INJURED HIS LEG IN PRACTICE, BUT SAID HE WOULD RIDE IF HE HAD TO BE CARRIED TO HIS BIKE.

PRESENT WORLD TITLE-HOLDER, TINY BRITON, PETER CRAVEN, LEADS ENGLAND'S CONTINGENT OF FIVE RIDERS. CRAVEN, WHO ALSO WON IN 1955, IS STRONGLY FANCIED TO RETAIN THE TITLE.

AMONG OTHER FANCIED RIDERS ARE THE DASHING NEW ZEALANDER, BARRY BRIGGS, WHO WAS CHAMPION IN 1957 AND 1958; AND THE LITTLE-KNOWN RUSSIAN, BORIS SAMORODOV, WHO CREATED A BIG IMPRESSION IN THE 20 QUALIFYING ROUNDS ON EUROPEAN CIRCUITS.
