Background: Expatriate Cubans throughout the United States staged a series of demonstrations on Monday (11 November), to protest over moves by members by members of the Organisation of American States (OAS) to end the twelve-year trade-and-diplomatic embargo on Cuba.

The largest demonstration took place in Union City, New Jersey, where more than a quarter of a million expatriate Cubans live. Protest organisers announced a programme of conditions, including the removal of the Cuban leader Fidel Castro, before the restrictions could be lifted.

The demonstration was aimed at the current OAS meeting in Quito, Ecuador, where delegates are considering a proposal from Venezuela, Colombia and Costa Rica to end the Cuban embargo.

A 'Cuban Liberation' spokesman told demonstrators that it might take more than parades and demonstrations to achieve a free Cuba. He quoted the activities of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, which has recently been invited to put the Palestinian case to the United Nations in the forthcoming Middle East debate.

Monday's demonstrations were generally good-natured. The only show of violence came with the tearing and burning of USSr and OAS flags.
