  • Description

Australian tennis star John Newcombe -- the number two seed at this year's Wimbledon open tennis championship -- survived an early setback to win a quarter final place at the expense of American Dennis Ralston today (Friday).

Newcombe, who won the England Lawn Tennis championship on the same courts two years ago, made a poor start when he lost his service in the first game.

During these opening stages of the first set, Ralston looked the surer of the two long-time rivals -- their last meeting resulted in a four-hour marathon at the Australian championships.

Newcombe, with one of the heaviest serves in tennis, managed to break back in the eighth game. Both players then held their service until the 26th game, when Newcombe finally broke through again -- Ralston double-faulting on set point.

After this 82 minuter first set, Newcombe continued to wear down his opponent. The second set went to 16 games before Ralston again cracked and lost his service. In the third set, Ralston double faulted with match point against him to give Newcombe a 14-12, 9-7, 6-2 victory.
