    A HIGH COURT JUDGE IN SALISBURY, RHODESIA, YESTERDAY SENTENCED A WHITE UNIVERSITY LECTURER, MR. JOHN CONRADIE, TO 20 YEARS IN PRISON WITH HARD LABOUR FOR TAKING PART IN AN ALLEGED TERRORIST CONSPIRACY.

    MR. CONRADIE, WHO IS 29 YEARS OLD, CAME TO RHODESIA FROM SOUTH AFRICA. HE PLEADED GUILTY TO SIX OF EIGHT CHARGES AGAINST HIM. THE PROSECUTION ALLEGED THAT THE CONSPIRACY INVOLVED THREATS TO KILL WHITES AND ATTACK BUILDINGS WITH RUSSIAN-MADE GRENADES.

    MR. CONRADIE, WHO HAS BEEN IN GAOL AWAITING TRIAL SINCE LAST AUGUST, WAS ALDO ACCUSED OF TAKING PART IN THE ACTIVITIES OF ONE OF RHODESIA'S BANNED AFRICAN POLITICAL PARTIES.

    THE COURT WAS TOLD THAT BECAUSE OF A HEART AILMENT MR. CONRADIE COULD NOT BE EXPECTED TO LIVE FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS. THE JUDGE REPLIED THAT HE WOULD HAVE TO DO "AS MUCH HARD LABOUR AS HE IS CAPABLE OF."
