    The first consignment of bananas -- part of a 20,000 ton contract -- left Port Bolivar, Ecuador, last Friday (11 May) bound for the People's Republic of China.

    The bananas, which were shipped in 144,000 boxes each containing between 28 and 30 lbs (13 kgms), are from 86 co-operative farms in the province of El Oro. The bananas are being marketed under the brand name of "Urecobasur y Banaoro".

    The banana exports to The People's Republic of China are being organist by the National Banana Programma of the Institute of Agriculture, based in the city of Guayaquil. The Government of Ecuador is also taking a close interest in the project, the first aimed at the Chinese market.

    Friday's shipment was overseen by Engineer Gonzalo Gambarrotti, Executive Director of the National Banana Programme, and Engineer Tito Ceballos, Director of the Southern Zone Programme.

    The bananas are being shipped on the British ship "Teesside Clipper" and will be stored in an electronically-regulated freezer unit. with a maximum speed of 24 knots, the "Teesside Clipper" is scheduled to reach The People's Republic of China in 18 days.

    On hand to watch the first consignment leaving Ecuador were a reporter and a press photographer from The people's Republic of China -- Tan Sai and Wu Yung Heng.
