Background: DAKAR'S MAIN STREET WAS RENAMED THE AVENUE LAMINE GUEYE IN MEMORY OF DAHOMEY'S FAMOUS STATESMAN. KNOWN AS THE GRAND OLD MAN OF FRENCH-SPEAKING AFRICA, AT A SPECIAL CEREMONY ON SUNDAY (MARCH 29).

PRIME MINISTER ABDOU DIOUF OF SENEGAL CONDUCTED THE INAUGURAL CEREMONY, AT WHICH HE WAS ACCOMPANIED BY MADAME LAMINE GUEYE AND BY DR. SAMBA GUEYE, PRESIDENT OF THE DAKAR MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

ALSO PRESENT AT THE CEREMONY WAS THE FRENCH SECRETARY OF STATE FOR FOREIGN AFFAIRS, MR. YVON BOURGES, WHO ARRIVED IN DAKAR THE PREVIOUS DAY TO REPRESENT FRANCE AT SENEGAL'S 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDEPENDENCE -- TO BE CELEBRATED ON APRIL 4.

LAMINE GUEYE DIED TWO YEARS AGO AT THE AGE OF 77. HE HAD SERVED AS PRESIDENT OF SENEGAL'S NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SINCE INDEPENDENCE IN 1960.

A LAWYER AND TEACHER BY PROFESSION, HE WAS ELECTED MAYOR OF ST. LOUIS -- SENEGAL'S FORMER CAPITAL CITY -- IN 1925. SUBSEQUENTLY HE BECAME MAYOR OF DAKAR, A POSITION WHICH HE HELD EVEN WHEN SERVING AS NATIONAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT.

PRIOR TO INDEPENDENCE, HE WAS AN INFLUENTIAL MEMBER OF THE FRENCH SOCIALIST PARTY, SAT IN THE FRENCH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, HELD JUNIOR MINISTERIAL OFFICE IN THE FRENCH GOVERNMENT AND WAS A FRENCH DELEGATE TO THE UNITED NATIONS IN 1956.

TWO SECTIONS OF THE DAKAR STREET NOW NAMED AFTER LAMINE GUEYE HAD PREVIOUSLY CARRIED THE NAMES OF THE FRENCH POLITICIANS GAMBETTA AND MAGINOT.
