    Robert Mensah, voted Africa's number one goalkeeper, was given a state burial at his home town of Cape Coast -- about 90 miles (144 kms) west of the Ghanaian capital of Accra -- on Saturday (6 November).

    Mensah, 32, who played for Kumasi Asante Kotoko, the reigning African soccer club champions, died in Tema last week from stab wounds he received when he intervened in a bar room brawl.

    His body was conveyed in a military aircraft from Accra to Kumasi in Central Ghana, the home town of his club, on Friday (5 November). From there it was flown to Sekondi, where Mensah once played for the now disbanded Sekondi Independence team, before being taken to Cape Coast for burial.

    SYNOPSIS: Thousands of mourners were at Kumasi Airport in Central Ghana Saturday to pay tribute to the memory of Robert Mensah, voted Africa's number one football goalkeeper, who died in Tema last week from stab wounds received when he intervened in a bar room brawl.

    The body was taken through the streets to the Kumasi Sports Stadium where thousands were later to pay their last respects to their club goalkeeper. Politicians and dignitaries had been delivering eulogies to Mensah over the past week and a two-minute silence had been observed in the National Assembly on Friday. Mensah's body was later taken to his home in Cape Coast -- 90 miles west of Accra -- and given a state burial.
