  • Description

THE MINISTERIAL COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN FREE TRADE ASSOCIATION (EFTA) BEGAN A TWO-DAY MEETING IN GENEVA TODAY (THURSDAY). ALL SEVEN NATIONS -- AUSTRIA, BRITAIN, DENMARK, NORWAY, PORTUGAL, SWEDEN, AND SWITZERLAND -- WERE REPRESENTED BY THEIR TRADE MINISTER.

THE MINISTERS DISCUSSED TARIFF CUT PROSPECTS; EUROPEAN ECONOMIC INTEGRATION; THE UNITED NATIONS WORLD TRADE AND DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE, DUE TO START IN GENEVA NEXT MONTH, AND THE WORK OF THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE RECENTLY SET UP BY THE EFTA.

AT THE MEETING, AUSTRIA WARNED THE OTHER MEMBERS THAT SHE WOULD PROBABLY HAVE TO LEAVE THE TRADING GROUP IF SHE SUCCEEDED IN OBTAINING ASSOCIATE STATUS WITH THE EUROPEAN ECONOMIC COMMUNITY -- THE COMMON MARKET.

THE DANISH FOREIGN MINISTER, MR. PER HAEKKERUP, CALLED ON MEMBERS TO LOWER EGG TARIFFS INSIDE EFTA, TO COMPENSATE DENMARK FOR THE POSSIBLE LOSS OF HER MARKETS INSIDE THE COMMON MARKET WHICH RECENTLY DOUBLED THE TARIFF ON EGG IMPORTS.

MR. EDWARD HEATH, BRITISH MINISTER FOR INDUSTRY AND TRADE, BRIEFED HIS COLLEAGUES ON THE RECENT MEETING OF THE WESTERN EUROPEAN UNION -- THE MEETING POINT BETWEEN BRITAIN AND COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES. THIS WAS THE THIRD MEETING OF THE EFTA MINISTERS WHO LAST MET IN STOCKHOLM IN SEPTEMBER.
