  • Description

AN ESTIMATED 1,000 FRENCH MAYORS WEARING SCARVES IN THE NATIONAL COLOURS OF RED, WHITE AND BLUE, MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS OF PARIS ON WEDNESDAY (8 APRIL) TO DEMAND REFORM OF LOCAL TAXATION.

THE MAYORS GATHERED OUTSIDE THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING AND THEN MARCHED TO THE OFFICIAL RESIDENCE OF THE PRIME MINISTER, THE HOTEL MATIGNON.

AMONG THE LEADERS OF THE PROTEST WERE FORMER LEFT-WING PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES FRANCOIS MITTERRAND AND GASTON DEFFERRE AND SOCIALIST LEADER GUY MOLLET.

THE MAYORS DISPERSED AFTER HANDING IN A STATEMENT AT THE HOTEL MATIGNON COMPLAINING THAT THE PRESENT LOCAL TAX SYSTEM WAS UNJUST, OBSOLETE AND UNABLE TO PRODUCE REVENUE TO MEET URGENT NEEDS. THE MAYORS--REPORTED TO BE MAINLY SOCIALISTS AND COMMUNISTS--ADDED THAT LOCAL AUTHORITIES WERE UNFAIRLY TREATED IN THE DIVISION OF TAX REVENUE BETWEEN THEM AT THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT.

STREET DEMONSTRATIONS ARE NORMALLY BANNED IN PARIS BUT POLICE HAVE MADE NO ATTEMPT TO INTERFERE WITH THE MAYORS, WHO HAVE BEEN MEETING AT A NATIONAL CONGRESS IN THE FRENCH CAPITAL.
