THE SOCIALIST DEPUTY WHO IS THE AUTHOR OF THE BILL, SIGNOR LORIS FORTUNA, WAS AT THE MEETING TO URGE THOSE PRESENT TO VOTE ONLY FOR POLITICAL PARTIES SUPPORTING THE BILL.

    SIGNOR FORTUNA'S BILL GOT BOGGED DOWN IN A PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE BECAUSE OF STRONG OPPOSITION FROM THE MAJORITY CHRISTIAN DEMOCRATS. DIVORCE IS NOT PERMITTED IN ITALY, LARGELY UNDER THE INSTIGATION OF THE ROMAN CATHOLIC CHURCH. THE DIVORCE BILL HAS THE SUPPORT OF THE COMMUNISTS AND OTHER RADICALS, BUT THE SOCIALISTS ARE DIVIDED ON IT.
