  • Description

Yugoslavia's President, Marshal Tito, is scheduled to arrive in San Francisco, California, Friday (18 October) in an unofficial visit at the invitation of Governor Pat Brown. Tito is to meet with President Kennedy in Washington Thursday (17 October) first.

Although San Francisco is in the northern part of the state, the prospect of the visit by Tito touched off demonstrations in Los Angeles, over 400 miles away in the southern part of California.

A group of men and women with placards paraded in front of the Los Angeles Federal Building. They said, in effect, that Tito is a Communist and should not be given a big welcome in the state. Many of the signs described the Yugoslav president as a "pig", a "butcher" and a "murderer."
