  • Description

Four armed, masked men blew up a Cyprus Broadcasting station relay transmitter near Paphos in the west of the island on Saturday night (August 4th)
The raiders, members of Cyprus's rebel Eoka organisation, ordered two technicians off the station before destroying the transmitter. The explosion cut off programmes to the island's western district.

The day before, Cyprus' President Makarios had ignored a lest warning from Eoke leader General George Grivas which was printed in Greek Cypriot language newspapers.

The Eoka movement want Enosis - union with Greece - and they have kidnapped Justice Minister Christs Vakis during the latest wave of violence. Leaflets signed by General Grivas and circulated in Limassol west Cyprus, said Mr. Vakis would only be released if there was a 'genuine' presidential election and political prisoners were freed. The leaflet added that Archbishop Makarios should choose between Church and Politics.

In the latest letter which appeared in the Cyprus newspapers, General Grivas wrote that if Archbishop Makarios continued with the independence line Cyprus would either come under Turkish sovereignty or Soviet rule. General Grivas added that he is not to be blame for Mr. Vakis' kidnapping but apart from that he made no further mention of the Justice Minister.

President Makarios says he is not prepared to discuss General Grivas' terms. He says General Grivas seems to be seeking to identify the end of his life with the destruction of Cyprus. The 75-year-old General organised the campaign against British rule on the island during the 1950s.
