  • Description

CYPRUS WAS GENERALLY QUIET YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) DESPITE THE MOUNTING TENSION FOLLOWING THE TURKISH ULTIMATUM. THERE WAS NO SERIOUS INCIDENTS BUT SHOOTING BROKE OUT IN TRACHONAS, A VILLAGE SUBURB OF NICOSIA IN THE EARLY MORNING.

ACCORDING TO OUR CAMERAMAN, WHO WAS ON THE POST SOON AFTER THE SHOOTING BEGAN, IT WAS STARTED BY SOME TURKISH IRREGULARS. THEY OPENED FIRE ON TRACHONAS VILLAGE ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE OF THE BRITISH MANNED "GREEN LINE". GREEK-CYPRIOTS RETURNED THE FIRE.

THREE TURKISH-CYPRIOTS RAN TO THE BRITISH POSITION, CONSEQUENTLY ATTRACTING GREEK GUNFIRE. BRITISH TROOPS SENT THEM BACK TO THEIR FORMER POSITION. FOR A WHILE THE SITUATION WAS TENSE AS THE BRITISH TROOPS MANNED POSITIONS BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES. THEN THE SHOOTING STOPPED AND BOTH SIDES RETURNED TO THEIR POSITIONS. THE TURKS BEHIND AN EARTH BANK, AND THE GREEKS BEHIND A SAND-BAG WALL. THERE WAS NO CASUALTIES.

TWICE THIS WEEK TURKISH-CYPRIOT CONVOYS, ESCORTED BY BRITISH MILITARY VEHICLES HAVE BEEN SUBJECTED TO A SEARCH BY GREEK-CYPRIOTS AT THE FAMAGUSTA GATE IN NICOSIA. EACH TIME THIS HAS GIVEN RISE TO HIGH-FEELINGS BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES. WHEN OUR CAMERAMAN FILMED THIS CONVOY GOING THROUGH YESTERDAY BOTH SIDES HAD ACCEPTED THE PROCEDURE AS ROUTINE, AND EVERYTHING WENT SMOOTHLY WITH THE MINIMUM OF DELAY.
