  • Description

THE GERMAN FEDERAL NAVY'S FIRST MISSILE-ARMED COMBAT SHIP, THE DESTROYER LUTJENS, ARRIVED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) IN ITS HOME PORT OF KIEL. THE LUTJENS IS THE FIRST OF THREE CHARLES F. ADAMS CLASS DESTROYERS ORDERED TO BE BUILT IN THE UNITED STATES FOUR YEARS AGO.

AS A NAVAL BAND PLAYED, THE NEW DESTROYER, THE FEDERAL NAVY'S LARGEST AND MOST MODERN SHIP MOVED MAJESTICALLY TO HER BERTH, WHERE HER COMMANDER, FRIGATE-CAPTAIN ANSGAR BETHGE, WAS TO REPORT TO THE NAVY INSPECTOR, VICE-ADMIRAL JESCHONNEK AND THE FLEET'S COMMANDER, VICE-ADMIRAL HETZ. DEFENCE MINISTER SCHMIDT AND NATO REPRESENTATIVES WERE ALSO THERE.

THE LUTJENS, BUILT AT A COST OF OVER 22 MILLION STERLING (OVER 54 MILLION DOLLARS), WILL BE JOINED IN SEVERAL MONTHS BY HER SISTER SHIPS MOULDERS AND ROMELL. THEIR HIGH COST IS LARGELY DUE TO THEIR SOPHISTICATED ELECTRONIC EQUIPMENT. THE HEART OF THIS IS A COMPUTER ABLE TO PROCESS OPERATIONAL INFORMATION AND PASS IT ON BOTH TO OTHER SHIPS IN THE BATTLE ZONE AND TO HIGH COMMAND ON LAND WITHIN FRACTIONS OF A SECOND, THUS ENABLING THE FLEET TO RESPOND TO ANY SITUATION WITH LIGHTING SPEED.

AT THE SAME TIME THE COMPUTER ALSO DIRECTS THE DESTROYER'S OWN MISSILES, WHICH CAN DESTROY SEA AND AIR TARGETS OVER A WIDE RANGE, AND ITS TWIN LONG-RANGE 5-IN (127MM) GUNS. AGAINST SUBMARINES THE LUTJENS CAN LAUNCH JET-PROPELLED TORPEDO-MISSILES WHICH DROP INTO THE TARGET AREA BY PARACHUTE AND THEN HOME ON THEIR TARGETS AUTOMATICALLY.

THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ORIGINALLY PLANNED TO HAVE FIVE MORE DESTROYERS OF THIS CLASS BUILT IN WEST GERMAN YARDS, BUT THE DECISION WAS REVERSED IN 1968.
