  • Description

NEARLY FIVE-HUNDRED OF THE WORLD'S TOP CANOEISTS, INCLUDING ELEVEN OLYMPIC CHAMPIONS, ARE TAKING PART IN THE WORLD CANOE RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS WHICH BEGIN ON EAST BERLIN'S "LONG LAKE", IN THE GRUENAU AREA, TOMORROW (FRIDAY).

TWENTY-FIVE COUNTRIES ARE REPRESENTED IN THE THREE-DAY CHAMPIONSHIPS, WHICH ARE HELD EVERY FOUR YEARS BETWEEN THE OLYMPIC GAMES. THIS YEAR MARKS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE BEGINNING OF ORGANISED CANOEING. A SCOT, JOHN McGREGOR, FOUNDED THE FIRST CANOE CLUB IN 1866 AFTER WINNING ACCLAIM WITH A 1,000-MILE (1,600 KILOMETRE) JOURNEY THROUGH EUROPE'S WATERWAYS IN A CANOE HE BUILT HIMSELF.

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE DIVIDED INTO TWO CLASSES - KAYAKS AND CANADIAN CANOES. THE KAYAKS, ESKIMO-STYLED CANOES, ARE RACED WITH A DOUBLE PADDLE, AND THE CANADIAN CRAFT WITH A SINGLE PADDLE.
