  • Description

The Abidjan Cycling Grand Prix, held on an 80 mile (130 kilometre) circuit on Sunday (January 24), attracted a entry of 26 competitors from three major cycling clubs in Abidjan -- Asran, Aseeci, and Moby Sports. The event was finally won by the only European in the race, Frenchman Klotz Frederic of Aseeci.

The course, which went from Abidjan to Bassam and Bingerville and back to Abidjan, included some stiff hill climbs.

The race was a fore-runner to another major event in the country's cycling calendar -- the Grand Tour of the Ivory Coast, which begins on February 14. The Ivory Coast team for the Grand Tour will be chosen from the first nine finishers in Sunday's Grand Prix.

Frederic's final time for the course was three hours 22 minutes 20 seconds -- four minutes 10 seconds ahead of the second man in, Kafando Lambert, a fellow member of Aseeci Club.
