  • Description

A group of 300 peasants, representing 40,000 small farmers in Southern Ethiopia, made the special journey to Addis Ababa this week -- to add their voice to the wave of protest sweeping the country.

For much of Monday (April 9), they picketed the Prime Minister's office in the capital in the hope of an interview. They complain that in their region, the Arussi Negelo, there has been considerable corruption amongst government officials, who have tried to take over the peasants' land.

When they discovered they were unable to see the Prime Minister, the peasants broadened the scope of their protest -- marching through the streets of Addis Ababa waving placards outlining their grievances.

On the same day, the government issued a White Paper setting out the aims of the new cabinet under Prime Minister Andalkachew Makonnen. On the question of land reform, it pledges that action will be taken to improve the condition of 90 per cent of the population engaged in agriculture.
