  • Description

KING BAUDOUIN OF BELGIUM TODAY (SATURDAY) REFUSED TO ACCEPT THE RESIGNATION OF THE COALITION GOVERNMENT. THE GOVERNMENT TENDERED ITS RESIGNATION LAST NIGHT BECAUSE OF DISAGREEMENTS BETWEEN THE TWO COALITION PARTIES ON DEMANDS BY BELGIANS DOCTORS THAT FREE MEDICAL SERVICES BE BANNED.

THE SOCIAL CHRISTIAN PARTY HAS ACCEPTED THE DOCTORS DEMANDS, BUT THE OTHER COALITION GROUP, THE SOCIALIST PARTY, HAS REJECTED THE DOCTORS' TERMS.

THE DOCTORS HAVE THREATENED TO STRIKE FROM MIDNIGHT TOMORROW UNLESS THEIR DEMANDS ARE MET.

IN A THREE-PAGE LETTER TO THE GOVERNMENT, KING BAUDOUIN SAID THE RESIGNATION WAS UNTIMELY, COMING WHEN BELGIUM WAS EMERGING FROM BITTER SOCIAL UNREST, AND WAS THREATENED BY MORE SOCIAL TROUBLE.

THE KING WAS APPARENTLY REFERRING TO LAST WEEKS RIOTS AT GENK WHERE TWO MINERS WERE KILLED, AND TO THE THREATENED STRIKE BY THE COUNTRY'S NINE THOUSAND DOCTORS.

THE KING'S LETTER WAS RECEIVED BY THE PRIME MINISTER, M. PIERRE HARMEL. THE BELGIAN MEDICAL FEDERATION HAS NOW SOUGHT A MEETING WITH THE PRIME MINISTER. A DECISION ON WHETHER THE DOCTORS' STRIKE IS TO GO ON WILL BE MADE AFTER THE MEETING.
