    Two new ambassadors to the Ivory Coast called at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan on Monday (11 September) to present their credentials to President Felix Houphouat-Boigny.

    The new Canadian Ambassador to Abidjan is M. Gilles Mathiau, and the new envoy from Sierra Leens is M. Hector Bultman.

    In speeches during the ceremony, both ambassadors expressed a wish for continued and increased cooperation between the Ivory Coast and the countries they represent.

    In reply, President Felix Houphouet-Beigny told both ambassadors that the further development of good relations was in the best interests of Ivory Coast, and the countries represented by the new ambassadors.

    SYNOPSIS: Arriving at the Presidential Palace in Abidjan - capital of Ivory coast - on Monday, the new Canadian Ambassador, M. Gilles Mathiu. He was there to present his credentials to Ivory Coast's president, M. Felix Houphouet-Boigny. In presenting his papers M. Mathieu said he was very pleased to be back in abidjan after an absence of seven years. He remarked on the progress made in the county in his absence, and on the greatly increased cooperation between Ivory Coast and Canada over the years. Both the ambassador and President Housphouet-Boigny spoke of the value of continued cooperation between Canada and Ivory Coast..the President making a point of mentioning Canada's contribution to the cultural life of his country. There is a growing trade between Ivory Coast and Canada -- trade that both the President and the new Ambassador are interested in fostering. Ivory coast exports large quantities of cocoa and coffee, as well ??? a variety of tropical fruits. Canada offers many types of machinery to the fast expanding Ivory coast economy.

    Later, another credentials ceremony at the Presidential Palace. This time it was the new Ambassador from Sierre Leone who handed his papers to President Houphouet-Boigny. Like his Canadian counterpart, the ambassador from Sierre leone, M. Hector Bultman, remarked on the progress made in Ivory Coast in recent years. He ascribed this partly to the President's wise and dynamic leadership. M. Bultman said Sierre Leone an Ivory Coast share in the struggle for the total emancipation of the entire African race. Both M. Bultman and the President expressed a wish for closer cooperation between their two countries -- both coastal nations in West Africa. President Houphouet-Boigny received the assurance of the Sierre Leone Ambassador that he personally would encourage friendly and brotherly cooperation at all levels.
