A VICTORY FOR ARSENAL WOULD HAVE MEANT THE TITLE FOR THEM. BUT AN OWN GOAL BY ARSENAL FULL-BACK BOB MCNAB GAVE LEEDS THE POINTS, AND SPLIT THE CHAMPIONSHIP WIDE OPEN. ARSENAL TRAIL BY ONE POINT, BUT HAVE A GAME IN HAND. NOW THEY MUST WIN BOTH THEIR REMAINING MATCHES TO WIN THE CHAMPIONSHIP, AND THE RIGHT TO REPRESENT ENGLAND IN NEXT SEASON'S EUROPEAN CUP.

THE DISASTROUS OWN GOAL CAME AFTER A LEEDS ATTACK BEGUN WELL WITHIN THEIR OWN HALF ENDED AT THE FEET OF JACKIE CHARLTON, IN THE SIX YARD BOX. HIS SHOT BEAT BOB WILSON IN THE ARSENAL GOAL, BUT HIT THE GOALPOST. FROM THERE IT REBOUNDED ONTO McNAB AND STRAIGHT INTO THE NET. THE REFEREE WAS IMMEDIATELY MOBBED BY THE ARSENAL TEAM CLAIMING CHARLTON WAS OFFSIDE, AND PLAY WAS HELD UP FOR THREE MINUTES. BUT THE REFEREE CONTINUED TO POINT TO THE CENTRE SPOT, AND THE GAME ENDED IN VICTORY FOR THE HOME SIDE.
