    PRESIDENT NYERERE OPENED TANZANIA'S THIRD BIENNIAL WORKERS' CONGRESS ON SATURDAY (1 NOVEMBER). THE OPENING CEREMONY WAS PRECEDED BY A MASS MARCH BY DELEGATES OF THE NATIONAL UNION OF TANGANYIKA WORKERS (NUTA), REPRESENTING WORKERS AND PEASANTS THROUGHOUT MAINLAND TANZANIA.

    THE DELEGATES MARCHED FROM NUTA HEADQUARTERS THROUGH STREETS OF DAR ES SALAAM TO THE DIAMOND JUBILEE HALL. THERE THEY SAT DOWN WITH 37 OBSERVERS FROM FRATERNAL ORGANISATIONS IN AFRICA, EUROPE, ASIA AND THE AMERICA.

    THE CROWD OF 500 DELEGATES SWELLED TO ABOUT 5,000 AS MR. ALFRED TANDAU, NUTA SECRETARY-GENERAL, INVITED THE ENTIRE WORKING POPULATION OF DAR ES SALAAM TO JOIN THE PROCESSION AND THE OPENING CEREMONY.

    THE GOVERNMENT'S SECOND FIVE-YEAR PLAN TOPS THE AGENDA FOR THIS YEAR'S CONFERENCE, EXPECTED TO LAST A WEEK. AND ECONOMICS FORMED THE MAIN TOPIC OF PRESIDENT. NYERERE'S OPENING ADDRESS. HE ARRIVED AT THE MEETING WITH SECRETARY TANDAU AND TANZANIA'S SECOND VICE-PRESIDENT RASHIDI KAWAWA.

    THE PRESIDENT QUOTED EXAMPLES TO SHOW HOW RICH COUNTRIES WERE GETTING RICHER AND POOR COUNTRIES POORER. HE SAID THE ONLY WAY TANZANIANS COULD COMBAT EXPLOITATION BY RICH COUNTRIES WAS BY BUILDING UP THEIR OWN INDUSTRIES AND BY WORKING HARD.
