    THIS JAPANESE ASSAULT ON EVEREST IN ONE OF A RECORD NUMBER OF 13 EXPEDITIONS CLIMBING IN THE HIMALAYAS THIS STRING. EIGHT OF THEM ARE JAPANESE.

    JAPAN'S TOP PROFESSIONAL SKIER YIUCHIRO MIURA LEFT THE CAMP AT KATMANDU TODAY (THURSDAY) AND HOPES TO SKI FROM A HEIGHT OF 28 THOUSAND 855 FEET (8,795 METRES) DOWN MOUNT EVEREST, FROM THE SOUTH SUMMIT TO THE SOUTH COL. STRONG WINDS, A FORTY-DEGREE SLOPE, AND ROCK OUTCROPS ARE AMONG THE HAZARDS, AND HE GIVES HIMSELF ONLY A FIFTY-FIFTY CHANCE OF SUCCESS. IT'S ESTIMATED THAT SPEEDS IN EXCESS OF 112 MILES AN HOUR (180 KILOMETRES) MAY BE REACHED, BUT MR. MIURA WILL BE EQUIPPED WITH A SPECIAL PARACHUTE TO SLOW HIM DOWN IF THE NEED ARISES.
