A magnificent new bridge has been built by one of Europe's greatest port cities.... Hamburg. The imposing Kohlbrand bridge, already known as the 'Golden Gate' of Hamburg, will be opened on September 19. It connects the eastern and western sectors of Hamburg Port with the city's new industrial area and modern facilities to handle the rapidly increasing volume of container traffic.
The new bridge stretches for two and a half miles (four kilometres), nearly 240 feet (60 metres) above the water surface, its graceful lines showing modern engineering at its best.
The Kohlbrand bridge cost 131 million Deutschmarks, nearly 22 million pounds sterling, and took more than four years to complete. It is the third greatest bridge in Europe and will be an important link in traffic between Northern and Central Europe.
