    MORE THAN 25-THOUSAND PEOPLE MAYORS, MEMBERS OF THE CLERGY, AND SHIPWRIGHTS, MARCHED THROUGH TOULON, IN SOUTHERN FRANCE, YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) TO PROTEST AGAINST THREATENED SHIPYARD CLOSURES.

    THE MARCH BEGAN AT LA SEYNE, FOUR MILES (7 KILOMETRES) FROM TOULON, WHERE THE SHIPYARDS THREATENED WITH CLOSURE ARE SITUATED.

    THE MARCH BEGAN WITH FIVE THOUSAND DEMONSTRATORS. LED BY VILLAGE MAYORS. THE DEMONSTRATION GAINED SUPPORT ALONG THE ROUTE.

    THE ROMAN CATHOLIC BISHOP OF TOULON, MONSIGNOR GILLES BARTHES, JOINED THE MARCHERS ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF THE CITY.

    MORE THAN 2,700 WORKERS AT THE LA SEYNE SHIPYARDS ARE AT PRESENT ON STRIKE. THE SHIPYARDS ARE THREATENED WITH CLOSURE FOLLOWING HEAVY FINANCIAL LOSSES.

    ADMINISTRATORS ARE STUDYING THE FINANCIAL POSITION OF THE COMPANY WHICH OPERATED THE YARDS, AND THE SITUATION FACING THE LA SEYNE WORKERS WAS TO BE DISCUSSED BY THE PRIME MINISTER, M. POMPIDOU, AND THE FINANCE MINISTER, M. DEBRE, TODAY (WEDNESDAY).

    DEMONSTRATIONS IN SYMPATHY WITH THE LA SEYNE SHIPBUILDERS WERE ALSO HELD NEAR MARSEILLES, AND AT ROUEN, IN NORTHERN FRANCE.
