  • Description

One of the highlights of an Israeli fortnight taking place in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, was the presence of Hana Pitter, an attractive and efficient Israeli policewoman. Early this week she made her appearance on one of the African capital's busiest intersections and took over traffic control.

Wearing a khaki uniform with the insignia of Israel's police force. Hana attracted the attention of her male Ivorien colleagues and passersby. Women have formed part of the Israeli police for about 8 1/2 years and are essentially used for traffic duty. They must be between 18 and 30 years old, have a college degree, be taller than 1.60 metres (5 feet 3 inches), and can be married or unmarried. At present the force comprises 250 women who serve under a Commander.

Hana Pitter's visit to Abidjan was considered an excellent opportunity to promote the role of women in public life and, as a visiting celebrity she was presented with a bouquet by a group of local Drum Majorettes - who could themselves aspire to perhaps being among the Ivory Coast's first policewomen of the future. The fact that traffic was held up while the presentation ceremony took place, did not affect the interest of the occasion.
