  • Description

Veteran American diplomat David Bruce, fist head of the new United States mission in China, met with Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Chiao Kuan-Kua on Tuesday (15 May).

Mr. Chiao is reported to have urged accelerated normalisation of relations between the two nations.

Mr. Bruce made his visit after arriving in Peking the night before. Their meeting, which lasted 35 minutes, was the first official one they had inside The People's Republic, although it was informal.

Mr. Chiao, though called vice-minister, actually runs the ministry and is one of the most prominent spokesmen on Peking's foreign policy. He headed the first delegation from him country to the United Nations after the world body accepted Chinese membership.

The arrival of Mr. Bruce was also the beginning of the first full official working day of the new mission, which is not yet a full embassy. It is the first American presence in the capital since the Communists took power in 1949.

Although Mr. Chiao speaks English, the first meeting was conducted through an interpreter.
