CYPRIOT PRESIDENT ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS AND VICE-PRESIDENT DR. FAZIL KUTCHUK MET EACH OTHER FOR THE FIRST?

  • Description

CYPRIOT PRESIDENT ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS AND VICE-PRESIDENT DR. FAZIL KUTCHUK MET EACH OTHER FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY (7 SEPTEMBER) SINCE FIGHTING BETWEEN TURKISH AND GREEK CYPRIOTS SPLIT THE ISLAND SIX YEARS AGO. THEY MET AT THE 22ND PLENARY ASSEMBLY OF THE WORLD FEDERATION OF UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATIONS, MEETING IN NICOSIA.

DR. KUTCHUK, A TURKISH-CYPRIOT, HAS NOT FREELY EXERCISED THE POWERS OF THE VICE-PRESIDENCY SINCE HE LAST MET ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, A GREEK-CYPRIOT, ON CHRISTMAS EVE, 1963. NEITHER HAVE THE TWO MEN MET SINCE THEN.

AT THEIR LAST MEETING THEY AGREED TO A CEASEFIRE TO END THE BITTER COMMUNAL FIGHTING BUT THEIR CALL WENT UNHEEDED AND THE CONFLICT CONTINUED UNTIL A UNITED NATIONS CEASEFIRE WAS ACCEPTED ON 10 AUGUST 1964.

FIFTY NATIONAL U.N. ASSOCIATIONS ARE REPRESENTED AT THE WEEK-LONG ASSEMBLY, DURING WHICH DELEGATES ARE DISCUSSING THE ROLE OF THE U.N. IN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT, THE U.N.'S PEACEKEEPING ROLE, AND CONTROL OF THE ARMS RACE AND PROMOTING DISARMAMENT.

'WE ENDORSE YOUR OBJECTIVES AND PLEDGE OUR FULL SUPPORT FOR YOUR ENDEAVOURS,' ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS TOLD THE DELEGATES.

'WE IN CYPRUS HAVE HAD FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCE OF THIS BENEFICIAL ROLE (PEACEKEEPING) OF THE UNITED NATIONS, AND WE GREATLY APPRECIATE THE EFFORTS OF THE WORLD ORGANISATION FOR THE RESTORATION OF PEACE AND NORMAL CONDITIONS ON OUR ISLAND,' HE ADDED.
