  • Description

On US Armed Forces Day, May 16, about 75,000 West Belins watched the traditional parade at Tempelhof Airport of American contingents stationed in the city. Film shows some of the 3,000 American troops of the West Berlin garrison on parade tanks and artillery, watched by their commanders Major General Barkadale Hamlett, Brig-General Charles S. D'Orsa and Colonel Rex W. Beach.

Among the foreign guests attending the ceremony were Allied officers and twelve Russians headed by Soviet Commander in East Berlin, General Zaharov. Police were busy handling the enormous crowd of spectators and at one point had difficulty in clearing the runaway for a landing aircraft.

American guest speaker General Clyde D. Eddlemen, C-in-C US Army Europe, told the soldiers the garrisons was 'small but potent". They were "standing sentinel today on Berlin's freedom".
