Background: The Central Committee of FIFA, the controlling body of international football, met in Frankfurt today to discuss the deadlocked position between Russia and Chile on the location for their second round World Cup Game.
Winners of their respective groups, Russia and Chile had met in late 1973 in the first leg of a two-games qualifying series for a place in the 1974 final. The game took place in Moscow and the two teams drew 0-0 However, following this game, the Chilean coup took place and the Russians refused to play in the Santiago Stadium which had been used as a detention contra by the Chilean Military rulers.
Whilst the Russian team toured Latin America playing a number of friendly games, FIFA officials attempted to negotiate a compromise, eventually leaving the matter to be discussed by the full committee at a meeting prior to the World Cup Draw in Frankfurt.
At the conclusion of this meeting, which took place in the Airport Hotel, the Russians - who continued to refuse to play in Santiago -were voted out of the 1974 competition be the delegates and Chile sill now join the finalists.
The meeting also decided to ask Spain and Yugoslavia to play a deciding game for the final place among the finalists in West German in February. Film Shows
