  • Description

On Monday (30 September) the United Nations General Assembly voted to reject South Africa's credentials to the world body. The Assembly also voted to ask the Security Council to review South Africa's future relations with the United Nations.

The Assembly endorsed a recommendation from the nine-member Credentials Committee which, last Friday (27 September), refused to accept the South African documents. The cote was 98 to 23 with 14 abstentions.

The Assembly then voted on a resolution sponsored by 45 countries and introduced by Uganda to refer South Africa's relationship with the U.N. to the Security Council for review.

South Africa cast the only negative vote on the second resolution.

It is not known when the Council would meet on this question but it is unlikely the fifteen-nation body would recommend any change in South Africa's status. Britain, France and United States have the power of veto and they are expected to use it.

Instead, it is believed the African nations will pursue a policy of harassing and embarrassing the South African delegates.

Diplomatic sources say a confrontation could come if South Africa asked to take the floor and this right was challenged.

In this situation the President of the Assembly, the Algerian Foreign Minister Abdel-Aziz Bouteflika, would have to make a ruling in the light of Monday's vote.

The South African delegation took their place in the General Assembly on Tuesday (1 October) in spite of the previous day's vote.

SYNOPSIS: The Ugandan Foreign Minister, Miss. Elizabeth Bagaaya, urged non-acceptance of the documents.

Nigerian Ambassador Edwin Ogbu joined the call for rejection.
