  • Description

While Pakistan and Indian forces continue to engage on all fronts during the present war, life in the West Pakistani city of Rawalpindi continues normally.

Banks and business houses are still functioning, and, with the exception of a few military vehicles in the streets, traffic has been largely unaffected by the war with India.

This film, from Visnews cameraman Pino Giambattista, gives a clear impression that the city has not bee outwardly affected.

SYNOPSIS: While the battles between Indian and Pakistani forces continue on both western and eastern fronts, life in the West Pakistani town of Rawalpindi appears to be normal -- despite the constant threat of Indian bombing. The only military movements in the city are troops moving forward to the northern border areas.

Posters all over the city urge the Pakistani people to pay tribute to their country's armed forces, and to smash India, During the day, people are apparently continuing with their normal business. Banks and shops have continued to trade throughout the week, and the only outward sign of tension has been the constant attention of newspaper reports to the battles in East Pakistan and along the Kashmir border areas.

Rawalpindi has been the centre of the Pakistani armed forces' war communiques since the trouble began in March after the declaration of martial law in East Pakistan. There has been no visible evidence of Indian bombing since the hostilities spread to West Pakistan in November.

United Nations officials were recently stationed in Rawalpindi -- some were there to supervise the reception of foreign nationals who had been moved on the advice of their Governments from the front line areas.
