  • Description

In Beirut, the specially-appointed Secretary Court met at the offices of the Military Tribunal after taking the oath of new office. The Court deals with security violations in the Lebanese Capital.

SYNOPSIS: The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Lebanese Military Tribunal buildings in central Beirut. It came at a time in Lebanon when the resident 30-thousand-strong Syrian peacekeeping force is finding it increasingly difficult to maintain the uneasy peace between right-wing Christian and the Palestinian-Moslem left-wing factions.

The Security Court is presided over by Colonel Jirjes Qazzi, a Lebanese, and consists of a Lebanese Judge and three Syrian military officers, attached to the peacekeeping force.

The massive Syrian force has been in Lebanon since the end of the 1976 civil war in the country, but the Syrian troops are now reportedly causing some conflict themselves, with clashes between the peacekeeping soldiers and Lebanese and Christian fighters commonplace. The Christians initially welcomed the Syrians, but now many are pressing for total Syrian withdrawal.
