    ISRAELI FOREIGN MINISTER ABBA EBAN YESTERDAY (MONDAY) OPENED THE FIFTH REHOVOTH CONFERENCE WHICH IS DISCUSSING A NUMBER OF EDUCATIONAL AND SCIENTIFIC TOPICS UNTIL AUGUST 25. EDUCATION MINISTERS AND OFFICIALS FROM 57 COUNTRIES WERE MEETING LEADING INTERNATIONAL SCIENTISTS TO DISCUSS WAYS OF ADVANCING SCIENCE IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES.

    MINISTERS FROM 14 AFRICAN COUNTRIES, FOUR LATIN-AMERICAN AND TWO ASIAN COUNTRIES WERE PRESENT AT THE OPENING CEREMONY. PRIOR TO THIS, PRESIDENT SHAZAR HELD AN OFFICIAL RECEPTION FOR THE DELEGATES AT HIS RESIDENCE.

    THE OPENING CEREMONY, AT THE HEBREW UNIVERSITY CAMPUS, WAS ADDRESSED BY PRIME MINISTER MRS GOLDA MEIR AND THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF UNESCO, DR RENE MAHEU.

    REHOVOTH CONFERENCE, HELD FOUR TIMES SINCE 1960, BRING TOGETHER SCIENTISTS AND STATESMEN TO SEEK SPECIFIC AND PRACTICAL MEANS OF UTILISING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF SCIENCE TO HELP DEVELOPING NATIONS. EARLIER REHOVOTH CONFERENCES DEALT WITH SUCH SUBJECTS AS NUTRITION, AGRICULTURE, HEALTH AND ECONOMIC PLANNING. THIS YEAR THE SUBJECT IS EDUCATION. DISCUSSIONS WILL CENTRE ON THE BRAIN DRAIN OF QUALIFIED PERSONNEL FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES, SCIENTIFIC BOOKS FOR CHILDREN, FUTURE TEACHING METHODS AND OTHER TOPICS.

    PLENARY SESSIONS WERE DUE TO BE HELD IN REHOVOTH ITSELF TODAY AND TOMORROW, FOLLOWED BY TRIPS AROUND THE COUNTRY. RESUMING NEXT SUNDAY AND MONDAY, THE CONFERENCE WILL DIVIDE INTO WORKSHOPS WITH THE CONCLUDING CEREMONY TAKING PLACE ON AUGUST 25.
