  • Description

Portuguese Communist leader, Alvaro Cunhal, has called for stern measures against terrorism whether it emanates from the right or the left. He was addressing a mass rally on the third day of a Communist fete at Vale do Jamor, near Lisbon on Sunday (11 September). Mr. Cunhal's address follows a wave of recent bombing that wrecked government offices last week.

SYNOPSIS: The Communist fete at Vale do Jamor was held over three days and attracted about 700 exhibition from artists and a number of countries.

Organised by the Communist weekly, Avante, the fete also included a circus, a theatre and chess tournament.

Among e attractions were exhibitions from various Communist parties an governments, all of which provided a colourful backdrop. Total attendance was estimated to exceed two hundred thousand.

The Government of Mozambique also was represented. Mozambique is one of the African states locked in 'war' with Rhodesia. Like Mozambique, Angola is another African state that has recently won independence from colonial Portuguese rule.

Although the rally was peaceful, Portuguese authorities took no chances and ordered a paramilitary guard to be present when the Communist party leader inaugurated the fete.

Secretary General, Alvaro Cunhal, told the huge gathering that the Communist Party demanded energetic measures to discover, arrest, judge and severely punish terrorists. He was specifically referring to a series of bombings last week against government land reform offices on Thursday (8 September). He said it was a criminal provocation against agrarian reform and condemned the actions generally, whether they came from fascist terrorist groups or from irresponsible 'left wing adventurers'. A police search for the bombers is underway but so far there has been strict official silence on its progress.
