  • Description

Fighting finally appears to have ended on the Syria/Lebanese border. Even as the United Nations ceasefire came into effect on Monday (22nd October) fierce battles were still reported from Mount Hermon - the 9,000 foot mountain the Israelis claim to have captured. On Thursday (25th October) Israeli forces stationed on the mountain were reported to be fighting off Syrian and Palestinian advances.

The Israelis thwarted the Syrian artillery, aided by extra supplies of men and ammunition and heavy air attacks. Mount Hermon is the base of a key Israeli radar post for watching both Syria and Lebanon. Syrian commandos took control of the area in the first attacks of the war. Its commanding position and the obvious advantages the mountain affords for surveillance have made it an ideal choice ??? United Nations ceasefire observers, who are believed to be headi??? at direction.

Several villages on the border were caught between the fire of the opposing forces. In the village of Khiam, 9 people died and an unknown number ware injured when a Israeli plane crashed into it. Few houses escaped damage - some were wrecked completely. As the villages mopped up the damage, more Israeli planes were seen overhead, but no fighting was heard. Life was slowly returning to normal - school children picked their way through the debris to go back to school.
