  • Description

President Zia ul-Haq, Pakistan's military ruler, has just returned from three days of top level talks in Saudi Arabia. The discussions covered a wide range of topics including regional security, muslim unity and the situation in Iran.

SYNOPSIS: At an airport news conference on his return to Islamabad President Zia gave details on his talks with Saudi Arabia's King Khaled and Crowd Prince Fahd. Speaking in Urdu, the national language of Pakistan, he described the discussions as useful and said they'd concerned the entire Islamic World.

President Zia confirmed the Iranian crisis had been one of the subjects covered, but denied that a recent visit to Iran by one of his advisers had anything to do with the American hostages. During the conference he also told reporters an Islamic Summit was likely in 1980. President Zia made no mention of Pakistan's ailing economy. Although recently Saudi Arabia came up with a 200-million dollar relief grant.

The President's visit to Saudi Arabia came just before the coup in Afghanistan...but it's thought the talks may have covered the Soviet build up in the region.
