Istanbul turned out in full force to welcome home Premier Menderes, Feb 26, at Yeshilkoy Airport. As he stepped form his plane several thousand swept across the tarmac breaking through the police and troop barrier.
Under obvious emotion, the Premier greeted the jostling well-wishers, tears in his eyes.
Ahead of his car, as it drove through Istanbul, hundreds of sheep and camels were sacrificed. The roads ran red with the blood of thanks-giving.
At Ankara, where Mr. Menderes visited President Bayar, he was carried shoulder high by excited, thankful supporters.
The bodies of the fourteen victims of the aircrash at Gatwick, UK, preceded Menderes to Turkey by three days. The scene contrasted sharply with the Premier's return. The coffins unloaded, relatives searched the caskets for their loved ones who were later given the final rites at a mass funeral in Ankara's Hadji Bayram Mosque.
Before returning to Turkey Mr. Menderes visited fellow passengers injured in that tragic crash. They are in Redhill hospital, Surrey. The Turkish Premier also visited three people who took part in the rescue of survivors - Mr. and Mrs. Bailey, the couple who assisted Mr. Menderes before an ambulance drove him to the London Clinic, and Dr. Knight of Crawley. He invited them to Turkey for a holiday as his guests.
