Leaving Portsmouth harbour, Aug 4, H.M.S."Vanguard" the last of the Royal Navy's battleships, ran aground in the harbour entrance. The ship was on her way to the Gareloch, in Scotland where she will end her life in the breakers yard.
For 90 minutes the warship that has never fired its guns in battle was stuck fast. Four ocean going tugs of the Royal Navy, waiting for the "Vanguard" off the Isle of Wight, were called into the rescue. Only the pushing of the tugs prevented the warship from crashing into the jetty.
Later it was discovered that the 44,500-ton giant had fouled on the chains of a harbour car ferry, which threw her off course, out of the main channel into the shallows.
