INTRODUCTION The new United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mr. Andrew Young, was in Zanzibar on Sunday (6 February) to attend celebrations marking the launching of Tanzania's new ruling "Revolutionary Party".

SYNOPSIS:A military parade was held in Zanzibar's Amaan Stadium to commemorate the event. On display in the stadium were portraits of Tanzania's political leaders, the late Sheikh Abeid Karume, the First Vice-President of the United Republic; today's Head of State, President Julius Nyerere; the Prime Minister, Mr. Rashidi Kawawa, and present First Vice-President of the Cabinet, Mr. Aboud Jumbe.

Delegates from over 60 countries attended the celebrations. As well as Mr. Young, several African leaders were present including President Kenneth Kaunda of Zambia, President Siad Barre of Somalia, and Present Juvenal Habyalimana of Rwanda. The new "Revolutionary Party" represents a merging of the Tanganyika African National Union (TANU) and the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP).TANU is the ruling political party on the mainland and the ASP is the branch party in Zanzibar. Tanzania, formerly Tanganyika, became a Republic in 1962, and Zanzibar united with it two years later.

After the celebration, President Nyerere and Dr. Kaunda held talks with Ambassador Young. President Kaunda spoke of a peaceful intervention by the United States aimed at avoiding unnecessary bloodshed, but President Nyerere called on the U.S. and other countries to encourage Britain and the Rhodesian Nationalists to agree.
