  • Description

Captain Ernest Medina, one of the United States Army officers charged with murder in the "Pinkville Massacre" at the South Vietnam hamlet of My Lai on March 16, 1968, returned to his home of Montrose, Colorado on Thursday (August 13) in search of character witnesses.

Captain Medina was given a heroes welcome by the citizens of Montrose, a small Mexican border township where he was raised.

His arrival coincided with the annual American-Mexican Fiesta but the band was playing a welcome message for the man who determinedly refutes his part in the alleged murder of 175 civilians.

Friends and strangers alike greeted Captain Medina with messages of encouragement. One observes said that if Medina had come to find character witnesses for himself he could count on the entire population to support him.

SYNOPSIS: Montrose, Colorado is a town close to the United States - Mexican border. It is also the place where Captain Ernest Medina of the United States Army was raised. Captain Medina had come home - to a heroes welcome.

The young Vietnam veteran was one of the Army officers charged with murder in the "Pinkville Massacre" at the South vietnamese hamlet of My Lai on March 16,1968. He now faces the trial to answer that charge of murder. But in Montrose he was a hero - a local boy in need of help. He had returned, he said, in search of character witnesses. It was evident both from his greetings and from the message of support that very few citizens of Montrose would not offer their testimony as to his good character.

For Captain Medina, with the heavy burden of standing trial for the alleged murder of 175 South Vietnamese civilians resting on him, the return to Montrose was a trip of nostalgia. He remembered the people, the places - they remembered him.

One of Montrose's townspeople is reported to have stated that if Medina had come to find character witnesses for himself, then he could count on the support of everyone. It certainly looked that way.
