  • Description

West Germany were due to start their first challenge appearance in the 70-year history of the Davis Cup tennis competition today(Saturday) when they met the holders, the United States, in Cleveland, Ohio. On Thursday, both teams were filmed during their final strenuous work-outs.

The United States have the same quad which defeated Rumania 5-0 in last year's challenge round -- veteran Arthur Ashe and hard-working Texan Cliff Richey in the singles, and Bob Lutz and Stan Smith in the doubles.

After two weeks of strenuous training, coach Dennis Ralston, himself a former Davis Cup star, is confident that his team will win through.

But West German left-hander Christian Kuhnke could make things difficult for his opponents. None of the Americans have yet faced the 31-year-old attorney, who has a powerful serve and is agile around the net. His singles partner is 31-year-old Wilhelm Bungert -- a Davis Cup mainstay for the last 11 years. Kuhnke and Bungert may also team in the doubles.

The West German challenge is masterminded by their coach, Australian Davis Cup veteran Fred Stolle:
