Background: Thousands of children and teenagers took part in an impressive display at Algiers Des Annasser Stadium on Sunday (July 5) to mark the eighth anniversary of Algeria's Independence.
With Chief of State Colonel Houari Boumedienne, members of his Government and representatives of the Council of the Revolution present in the packed stadium, some 10,000 youngsters-school children, students and young national servicemen-performed a mass display of gymnastics in the arena.
The emphasis, as it has been every year, was on the nations's youth. This year the celebrations also marked the country's four year development plan-a plan in which the young people of Algeria play a vital role.
There were several set-pieces-one in particular, was performed by 500 primary school children. It was entitled, "The Future". There were also displays by young members of the Army, and the symbolic lighting of a perpetual flame.
