  • Description

Work will begin in late March on a new road linking Djibouti, the port capital of The Territory of the Afars and the Issas, and Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital.

The road is being financed by the French government and should be finished by 1976.

The project involves the laying of 200 kilometres (125 miles) of road linking established highways in the two countries.

The route across the rugged Sierra and desert linking the two capitals is now only open to four-wheel-drive vehicles, severely restricting the growth of remote areas and holding back trade between the countries.

French President Georges Pompidou promised his country's financial support for the road-building project when he visited the two countries early last year. The preliminary survey for the work has now been completed.

Work has already begun on water-drilling operations along the route. Further preparations will also be made in March, before the actual road-building begins in September. March also marks the opening of one of the first sections of the new road.

Most of the roadwork will be done in The Territory of The Afars and The Issas with only 28 kilometres (17 miles) to be laid in Ethiopia.
