  • Description

LARGE CROWDS OF PILGRIMS FROM ALL OVER CEYLON AND SOUTH INDIA -MAINLY HINDUS AND BUDDHISTS - PERFORMED SPECTACULAR RITES AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS MONTH, WHEN THE ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF PENANCE WAS HELD AT THE JUNGLE SHRINE OF KATARAGAMA. SOME OF THEIR ACTS OF PENANCE INVOLVED ACUTE SELF-INFLICTED TORTURE.

THE CEREMONIES BEGAN WITH RITUAL BATHING IN THE "RIVER OF GEMS". MOST OF THE PENITENTS HAD VOWED TO PERFORM THE KAVADI DANCE ROUND THE TEMPLE TO THE MUSIC OF FLUTES AND DRUMS. SOME, HOWEVER, SUBMITTED THEMSELVES TO MORE RIGOROUS ORDEALS. THUS, ONE MAN WAS SEEN ROLLING ON BURNING HOT SAND; ANOTHER WAS HANGING ON WIRES HOOKED TO HIS BODY WHILE BLESSING OTHER DEVOTEES; YET ANOTHER WAS WEARING SANDALS LINED WITH SHARP PINS, WHILE HIS BACK WAS PIERCED BY WIRES.

THE GOD KATARAGAMA, IN WHOSE HONOUR THIS FESTIVAL IS HELD, IN HIGH ESTEEM FOR MIRACULOUS HEALING POWERS AND FOR HELP TO SUPPLICANTS IN DISTRESS.
