    BRITISH SOLDIERS ARE GUARDING THE RADIO TRANSMITTER AT FRANCISTOWN IN BECHUANALAND WHICH IS BEING USED TO BEAM BRITISH RADIO BROADCASTS TO RHODESIA. THE SOLDIERS BELONG TO THE GLOUCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT AND WERE FLOWN THERE FROM THEIR BASE IN SWAZILAND DURING THE CHRISTMAS WEEKEND. IT WAS DECIDED TO USE BRITISH TROOPS TO GUARD THE TRANSMITTER AFTER MR. SERETSE KHAMA, THE BECHUANALAND PRIME MINISTER, SAID THAT LOCAL FORCES WERE INADEQUATE FOR THE JOB.

    THE BRITISH GUARD CONSIST OF ABOUT 95 MEN. THEIR BATTALION HAS BEEN STATIONED IN SWAZILAND FOR SOME MONTHS.

    THE TRANSMITTER -- WHICH IS OPERATED BY ABOUT TWENTY BRITONS -- WAS SET UP AFTER RHODESIA'S UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE AND HER IMPOSITION OF RADIO CENSORSHIP. THE TRANSMITTER IS TO BE USED TO BROADCAST BRITISH BROADCASTING CORPORATION (BBC) PROGRAMMES TO RHODESIA. IT HAS ALREADY BROADCAST QUENN ELIZABETH'S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE AND PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON'S ADDRESS TO THE UNITED NATIONS GENERAL ASSEMBLY ON DECEMBER 16 AND IS NOW BROADCASTING REGULAR NEWS BULLETINS TO THE BREAKAWAY COLONY.
