  • Description

The United Nations general Assembly on Monday (18 December) declared that mandatory sanctions against Rhodesia could be revoked only by the Security Council and that unilaterally lifting the ban would be a violation of the United Nations Charter. The resolution put forward by a group of African countries, including the five so-called front line states was adopted by 107 votes to 16, with 21 abstentions. Britain and the United States which have lifted sanctions against Rhodesia were among the countries voting against the text.

SYNOPSIS: After President Salim A. Salim announced the vote, the U.S. representative Miss Ester Cooper-Smith explained her country's position.

Cuban delegates Raul Roa-Kouri said it was the duty of the international community to oppose the unilateral raising of sanctions. The African sponsored resolution labelled the decision by Britain and the United States to lift sanctions as a violation of the U.N. charter.
